4atural Stand Dynamics in Longleaf Pine: How Climatic Disturbances Shape the Community

چکیده
INTRODUCTION 1,ongleaf pine (Pinuspalustris) once dominated the overstory of a wide range of southern plant communities including wet flatwoods and savannas of the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains to higher, droughty sand deposits such as the fall line sandhills and the central ridge of Florida. It was also the dominant overstory tree on the lower rolling sandhills of lower Mississippi, central Louisiana, and east Texas. Longleaf pine even oxtended onto the mountain slopes and ridges of Alabama and northwest Georgia, where it was found growing at elevations up to 600 m. Frequent low intensity fires favored longleaf over other pines, because it has seedlings better adapted to surviving such fires. These periodic fires, every 2 to 8 years, also shaped the rest of the community, keeping woody shrubs in check while promoting the growth of grasses and forbs.

Canopy disturbance and tree recruitment over two centuries in a managed longleaf pine landscape
Disturbance history was reconstructed across an 11300 ha managed longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) landscape in southwestern Georgia, USA. Our specific objectives were to: (i) determine forest age structure; (ii) reconstruct disturbance history through the relationship between canopy disturbance, tree recruitment and growth; and (iii) explore the relationship between canopy disturbance and ...
متن کاملTree-ring Dating of Old-growth Longleaf Pine (pinus Palustris Mill.) Logs from an Exposed Timber Crib Dam, Hope Mills, North Carolina, U.s.a
On 26 May 2003, intense rainfall from a series of thunderstorms in eastern North Carolina caused flooding that eventually destroyed the concrete dam in Hope Mills, draining Hope Mills Lake, and revealing a formerly submerged and buried structure that was identified as a timber crib dam. Inspection revealed these logs to be old-growth longleaf pines, which are now rare on the coastal plain lands...
متن کاملModeling the effects of forest management on in situ and ex situ longleaf pine forest carbon stocks
Assessment of forest carbon storage dynamics requires a variety of techniques including simulation models. We developed a hybrid model to assess the effects of silvicultural management systems on carbon (C) budgets in longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) plantations in the southeastern U.S. To simulate in situ C pools, the model integrates a growth and yield model with species-specific allomet...
متن کاملThe path back: oaks (Quercus spp.) facilitate longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) seedling establishment in xeric sites
Understanding plant–plant facilitation is critical for predicting how plant community function will respond to changing disturbance and climate. In longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystems of the southeastern United States, understanding processes that affect pine reproduction is imperative for conservation efforts that aim to maintain ecosystem resilience across its wide geographic ran...
متن کاملFate of Residual Canopy Trees following Harvesting to Underplant Longleaf Pine Seedlings in Loblolly Pine Stands in Georgia
Over the past few decades, reports of forest health problems have concerned scientists and forest managers in loblolly pine forests of the southeastern United States. Several interacting factors likely contribute to observed reductions in loblolly pine health, including low resource availability on many upland sites that were once dominated by longleaf pine. Currently, land managers are interes...
